Peter S. Mussigbrod was born in Muskau, Germany, in 1856 to Charles F. and Elizabeth Mussigbrod. He was educated in Germany through a doctor of Philosophy degree at the University of Berlin in 1890. For the next two years Mussigbrod worked to acquire a practical knowledge of mining before he immigrated to the United States in 1892, arriving in Montana in June of that year.
